A severed head was found near the Hollywood sign by people walking their dogs Tuesday.
"The dogs started playing with an object inside of a bag, and when the hikers looked, they realized it was a male's head," Los Angeles Police Officer Rosario Herrera tells PEOPLE.
Adds Herrera, "It seems the head was placed in that location and not where the crime happened."
The victim has not yet been identified, but according to Los Angeles County Coroner's Lt. Larry Dietz, "We're still looking" for more information.
